Law

Alexander brothers sentenced to 30 years in prison (youtube.com)

US law. No actual ‘sex trafficing' involved in this case, though, as it would mean anything to any person. In this case it was just actions that currently accord with the current legal definition, such as ‘enticing’ someone to come visit you in another state. Because they had things to enjoy (expensive and vacation stuff) this is ‘enticing' in current US law. Somehow it also triggers ‘fraud’ because there was ‘false pretences’ involved.

The drugs involved are cocaine, GHB, and alcohol. They gave these to the women. If they slpped GHB to women unbeknownst (and they at no point admitted to slipping drugs unbeknownst to the women), this is a crime of the highest seriousness, especially if taken advantage of.

However, on the other side of this, the act they performed was sexual, and the women would not have travelled that far except with the expectation that such a thing was the likely outcome or reason. The drugs they said they were slipped would have been in addition to the drugs they voluntarily took, in a social context. If they were shown nice things to come and enjoy, the reason they went was to enjoy those things, it could be said.

Has lying or stretching the truth become criminal in the US now? It never was before, except in cases of actual fraud, in which the lie itself is not criminal.

The most serious part of the accusation is the number of women over the period of time (high school to recent, all testifyng they had been drugged and taken advantage of). None of them have provided proof, but the number of instances should have some weight. The best evidence available perhaps would be to know these women and to know if they're standup people or not. However, if there are multiple women and they each thought they had been drugged, why did none report or get a tox report the next day?

Paris has been in headlines for a cuple week for constant protests, but I din't bother to mention because French are always protesting.

'Japanese police could soon gain the power to secretly access a suspect's smartphone remotely, without physically seizing the device or notifying its owner.

On October 16, Japan's cabinet approved a bill allowing investigators to examine messages inside encrypted applications, including those with disappearing-message features.' The Daily Nippon.

How would that even be possible though? except to legislate that all people carry only phones with built-in backdoors.

Later this month, they arrested the first person for refusing to unlock his phone for police.

Information

This ‘shadow president’ misinfo is maybe the best narrative that's hit politics in a while. It hits the right buttons somehow.

At what point do you encourage (even support or do grants for) competition? Musk did what no one else could or willed, and contributed more than maybe any other industrialist/engineer in the era, but his reward has happened. He's the richest man. Is it better to leave his monopoly (and thereby increase it) or to create competition?

I mean for citizens. For government, its probably much better to keep his as is.

Haiti hired US mercenaries to fight its gangs. Here's how it's going (youtube.com)

Erik Prince in the capital. Even the port is surrounded by gangs.

He gets tens of millions for his service, estimated, plus 10% of any new customs revenue generated if he clears smuggling etc. His cost is 1/6 what Haiti's annual camp cost was before, he said.

He hasn't taken out any gang leaders, which he said is not how insurgencies are defeated, despite significant focus on that in the US. It happens by taking significant manpower off the battlefield. Enabling sovereignty to resume. His goal is so people can leave their home and go to work or groceries or whatever and return to their house without being killed, robbed etc.

Breaking News: Lula wins Brazil election, securing a fourth presidency (youtube.com)

Shall we return to kingships? People are protesting in Europe, but they do that once in a while, it always goes away after they get exhausted. And if they don't give up, just give them a slightly bigger piece of the pie and some promises.

The leaders use extralegal tactics against each other, lawfare, false or ridiculous charges, sometimes imprison their opponents, disparage with words. Throw out promises to the public to get the votes. Very little representation of the people's will if any at all.

Lula is the left-wing. Bolsonaro was the right's candidate.

Affordability Squeeze: Triple Shocks Keeps Prices High (youtube.com)

Finally getting numbers more in line with the obvious ones I've been having people fight against me for the past several years trying to say.

Since 2020, things up between 30 and 40% on their board. That means the national debt and government spending got about 25% cheaper so far. And not sure the percentage of money that was transferred from savings accounts to rich companies.

People have tried saying it's a one off thing that's price inflated, he notes, for years, but in aggregate it's everything.

People talking about the bond market again.

People questioning what the AI selloff (not massive anyway, just significant) means about AI investors. Maybe that it's just an irresistible bubble. You can't be confident in it, but you can't ignore the uptrend.

$25b fine for Meta for decieving users about privacy. To the State on New Mexico. But one person did say, so that means we can sue them too, right?

'Zuckerberg owns 13.4% of Meta but 60.6% of votes.

So Meta is creating new shares that carry no vote.

He can sell those shares to pay the tax.

Google stock's historically bad day raises fears of AI bubble popping (youtube.com)

Never seen anything like -15% on Google. But fairly isolated, lots of the market green that day, and other BigTech not down anything like that.

Down $500b is the second-largest drop nominally for any company in history in a day (Nvidia had a -$600b day).

More people using AI search, including Google's versions, but that's less ad rev.

What's behind Japan's recent surge of corporate cyberattacks?ーNHK WORLD-JAPAN NEWS (youtube.com)

Leaks of personal information, addresses, dl photos.

Citizen (company) has tons of personal info on customers and maybe leaked 100k people's. GMO leaked 940k or more records. Mr Max leaked membership info of 1.7m members. Times Car Share (park24) leaked 6.6m records, including images of drivers licences that ‘could be used as identity verification.’

These records and dl photos will circulate on underground markets now, sold as packages or along with other information often. Almost 100% of the Nikei 225 have had a data breach in the past couple years.

Leaks/breaches of corporate websites and apps jumped up in July.

This is a government-level solution but government is not responsible in any country so far.

Websites taken down worldwide as AI reveals critical cyber-security threat | BBC News (youtube.com)

Governments and big companies. Two flaws in PHP (70% of websites). 4Chan and SomethingAweful down, parts of Wikipedia, because they need to patch before they go back online. Japan's PM tweeted about it, and the US's top glowy companies advised taking systems offline if you can't immediately patch. Netherlands government companies seem to have been first to go offline. BreachForums (a hacker forum) also went offline. Who knows if the hacker forum got hacked and all their creds exploited?

The AI research company said what they found was beyond the capability of people. A complex chain of steps beyond what they suspect people can conceive.

Blackhats seized the opportunity to find unpatched sites.

Ok, that's the news, and here is the tech take...

A PHP Bug Just Took Websites Offline Worldwide (youtube.com)

It's called PHP2Shell. Discovered by Calif, who used GPT-5.6 Sol as part of their Patch th Planet initiative), according to OpenAI. Wiz (now owned by Google) also did using Gemeni 4 Argon. Calif_io tweeted that it was lcfr_hax who first tweeted about it Aug 5, using no special GPT models, just regular GPTs everyone can use, because that person was familiar with PHP's history and already had a theory about where bugs were hiding. In 2024 PHP Foundation talked about the first signs of this problem but no one could exploit it.

Railway said their recent hack prehaps looks like the hackers used this.

An AI SRE observability stack. You have to update your php, not just an app or something. Every PHP version for past decade succeptible.

A request, if it runs php out-of-memory at just the right/wrong moment, 'PHP could leave partially initialized internal data behind and later treat it as valid, corrupting memory.' So someone can run their own code on your server without logging into your server, ie remote code execution.

I checked and my hosting provider said they weren't vulnerable. I messaged their AI Agent, and it said,

‘I understand why you want to update PHP after the recent PHP2Shell reports. [The hosting company]’s managed hosting environments were checked and are not vulnerable, and attack attempts are already blocked. Officially patched PHP versions are being rolled out automatically, so you do not need to change PHP versions or take any action, and no downtime is expected. There is no ETA yet, but updates will be provided on Hostinger’s status page.’

I asked it to double check my sites, because most are handcoded simple HTML/PHP sites. The Agent said,

'I double-checked the hosted sites I could retrieve:

9 sites: PHP 8.3

2 sites: PHP 8.2

5 sites: PHP 7.4

The PHP version check itself does not indicate that any of them are vulnerable to PHP2Shell. [The company]’s security testing confirmed that managed hosting environments, including yours, are not vulnerable, and attack attempts are already blocked.

'One account listing reported 17 entries but returned 16 site records, so I can’t honestly call the inventory fully complete. I also recommend not changing PHP versions just for PHP2Shell. Official patched versions will be deployed automatically, with no action required.'

Will people become sick of PHP?

PHP 8.2 through 9.5 are got proper releases from PHP, and older ones (8.1 and earlier, which is 60% of servers), got patches you have to patch yourself. Long tail.

Debian and Ubuntu and deb.sury.org have patches for this all the way back to PHP 7.4, and people thanked them.

Clouflare switched on web application firewalls (WAFs) ‘starteing October 21 3:01 am UTC) for all free and paid accounts. They did this about 9 hours ahead of public disclosure. Proton Mail goes full AI slop, Tuta starts going slop (youtube.com)

The CEO, Yen, made lots of statements that they should just go full AI coders, go fast, etc, at the company. Employees are afraid to criticize him, a 404 Media source said.

Only 3% of Tutamail's survey respondents wanted an AI copilot. Tuta seems to still be anti-AI. But they have started coding with a chatbot, which they say is OK because the coder still puts their name and rep on their code commits.

Tuta said their goal is to become more feature-rich to compete with Gmail.

Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance (news.ycombinator.com)

Something like $6b.

Because USDT is centralized, the American Central Bank is able to freeze those people's ‘money’ and they did so, so the thiefs can't move it. Nice to know stable coin is at the whim of the US gov. This is 2-3b of the heist.

The $3b bitcoin is gone into the hackers hands. They will go through mixers at some point to ‘launder’ the money, which is what usually bitcoin thiefs do. But they haven't yet, it's just sitting in a wallet, so it might be a government behind the hack.

‘The fact that it can be stolen makes it a real asset. Think about gold and cash. No one would bother stealing your credit card points or airline miles. What's real money and what's fake stuff that's not worth stealing?'

USDT seems more like a government credit, not money.

CLAVICULAR Talks Female Psychology, Drug Habit, Infamy (youtube.com)

‘I’m talking about men's issues and kind of identifying with that, and no one's been a spokesperson for the struggle in any meaningful way. ... There's a lot of disinformation. Or there's always been a key element that's been missing, and that's that looks are an extremely important thing, and they shouldn't be ignored. I think young men feel kinda understood by my message. ... Because I understand it. ... I was right there in the struggle.'

Maybe because the physical modifications are fairly new.

He says he wouldn't want to fight if someone insulte his sister, because he's high class and doesn't do that kind of thing.

Friedland raises the generational question, that when he was Clavicular's age, cool people never obsessed with anything, that's what losers might do. Cool people could just be themselves. He didn't say, but if a kid tried that now he'd be charged though.

We might add that in other eras bravery was what 20 years focussed on, and in others partying or making something useful, but in the current era those things are all prohibited for men, or so complicated and danger-ridded young men wisely avoid them, and the prizes for them have also been taken away. Looks is something women can't take away from men because they use it. We might expect that as long as the culture and society is feminine dominated, men will continue to occupy more feminine space. The opportunity and the advantage was there in the last generation, too, but they didn't take it, perhaps because they were raised with the stigma, but the current generation was raised by people who suffered for upholding something that only bit them, and served as an example of why they shouldn't uphold the same thing, and that generation that raised them probably spoke their doubts to their sons.

A part of that was that in a masculine society, male looks are antagonized against, since they're not useful to the group. They're individual and harmful to others in the group, more likely. I don't think that's changed much, but since men don't really hang in groups much anymore, and since all male activity which used to be better in groups is generally punished, the more individual style can allow for looksmaxing.

Another thing is while guys never thought having a low level job was great, those kids around Clavicular refer to it as chumping or slaving basically, like no value in it, sort of the same philosophy women had in previous generations, like why work when you can get someone to give you stuff.

Another thing, the influencer generation talks a lot like Show Business, they talk meta about everything involved in presentation, business, and all aspects of making content etc. Might be the transition to a more sophisiticated, but less idealistic culture, like Asia.

Every Ideology Starts as a Book Club — Duncan Umphrey (youtube.com)

Every time he even touched on a topic she didn't want to speak about, she went on the accusative, while laughing off to the side. But he does a decent job of not getting upset by that, and asks her calmly why she thinks they're talking about that.

Her main focus seemed to be trying to categorize people she targeted as ‘something wrong with them’ or defective some way. She seemed to really want to say that people who disagree or who discuss and debate from the opposing viewpoint are ‘boys’, defective, and need fixing, and ‘should be ashamed’ (laugh again off to the side), which does seem in line with the feminine, Democrat tactic, like H. Clinton or someone.
